Pins is a consultant, researcher and trainer on labour rights and ethical trade.

She specialises in

  • practical, collaborative ways to bridge the gap between standards on working conditions and reality for workers producing products be they here in the UK packing fresh produce or overseas on tea, cotton, sequinned handbags or iPhones
  • developing good practice and building capacity on labour standards for companies, trade unions and NGOs
  • understanding and co-ordinating different stakeholders
  • training.

Her particular areas of interest include: living wages, discrimination, company purchasing practices, agriculture, informal work, women workers, interactive and participatory training techniques and more recently the implementation of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, including how these can apply to small and medium-sized entreprises (SMEs).

As well as advisory work with Purple Dot, Pins works at the labour rights consultancy Ergon Associates where clients include international organisations, multi-stakeholder initiatives, companies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and trade unions.

She has previously worked for the Ethical Trading Initiative, Anti-Slavery International and The Body Shop, as well as for the UN Refugee Agency and Plan International, and as a freelance consultant. She is grateful for her education at Cambridge University and London's School of Oriental and African Studies. She is on the advisory panel of the international cotton improvement programme the Better Cotton Initiative and former advisory panel member of Barbed, a prison-based social enterprise. She has travelled extensively for work in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.
