How are vegetarian and vegan options more environmentally sustainable?
There are many business entries on the Purple Mapping tagged as providing vegetarian and vegan products.
Of course many people are vegetarian or vegan because of animal welfare considerations.
However the main reason these tags are included in the listings is because the vast amount of meat that the world is consuming is contributing to a variety of environmental and human welfare problems. These include food and water shortages, climate change, deforestation and much more.
Therefore eating less meat or becoming vegetarian or vegan can be an ethically driven and environmentally sound choice.
For more information about the problems being caused by the world’s current levels of meat consumption please see this excellent Guardian article 10 ways vegetarianism can help save the planet.
